The simple past tense of the verb "to be" i.e. હોવું  (“hovuM”) in Gujarati is simple. There are very few suffixes.
Interestingly, the choice of suffix depends on gender of noun/pronoun rather than whether it is first person (I, we), second person (you) or third person ( he, she, etc.). These forms will follow ઓ-ઈ-ઉં-આ-ઈ-આં (o-I-uM-A-I-AM ) યો-ઈ-યું-યા-ઈ-યાં ( yo-I-yuM-yA-I-yAM ) rule

  2. Hello,
Can you plz clarify, third person plural should use 'hatI' according to the table. But in the example '50 ladies were in the program', why it is 'hatAM'?

  3. Third person singular is not covered in the table, so how the last example is to be taken? Third person pl./respectful? Still 'hatI' in the table conflicts with hatAM in the example(the last example:My teacher was there)

  4. Sorry, third person singular is covered in the table, but singl.,plural both have 'hatI', then why it is 'hatAM' in the last example?

    1. "hatAM" is used to indicate respect. Refer http://learn-gujarati-from-english.blogspot.com/2013/11/using-plurals-to-indicate-respect.html for more details.
